Honda’s new Accord comes to market with new styling that takes things to a higher level. Honda’s previous generation of coupe was a great selling sports car which knew when to keep it conservative. I was impressed with its creative construction, a crucial take no prisoners mission. Furthermore, in addition to an impressive sedan, the new Accord coupe had to take a couple extra measures to win me over. And I tell you, it did not disappointed me.
I was fortunate to review an EX model by driving it around the suburbs of Houston, Texas. If I would describe the exterior, it is one hell of a sleek, at the top, and trend setting, of course all in a good way. I just can’t help but align it with the Infiniti G37 and BMW 3 series coupe . For saving up to $10k, one could have a stunningly beautiful coupe in the Accord, and perform fabulously with some of the best. But don’t get me wrong, the Infiniti and BMW are created and designed at the top of their class. Furthermore, I dont feel bad about taking the Accord coupe over the higher priced cars. The body and windshield are more raked, the front end is stealthier than it’s sedan sibling. Generally, it was more of a sports car rather than the regular passenger car, which the last generation clearly was.
The V6 powertrain is phenomenal and respond quickly to all of my pedal intervention. An important thing is , the car doesn’t feel as heavy like the sedan, and this made driving ability and stability out on the roadways more interactive. I wasn’t worried about accelerating further on the turns, the car handles it like a dream. Interior quality has no significant issues. Everything was within reach and the seating is comfortable if not, it was more supportive, it all fits into the sports coupe niche. The only negative issue is getting into the back seat. Although seating comfort is really not main attraction for any coupe, it sure fits a bit tighter than I liked it was.
Honestly, I know that the new Accord coupe would be exceed the best of expectations, but I came out of the testing with more of a delightment. It was really a great alternative to some of the comparably high priced cars in the market today, and will win over many buyers with it’s head turning facade and Honda’s tru-blue engineering and quality. I recommended this 2008 Honda Accord coupe to many aspiring sedan aficionados.

Customizing the seating position is with a knob to adjust height and lever to set seatback angle. Nonetheless, I was able to find a comfortable position for the duration of the test drive. Even on longer drives, the seating position remained comfortable. One notable positive feature for taller drivers is the cavernous roofline providing ample headroom for the giants out there. If I had one complaint, it would be access to the built-in seatbelts: once seated, they are hard to grab because they’re located lower than my shoulders (and I’m not tall!).
The HVAC system works quickly to cool down this large green house vehicle, and controls are very clearly labelled with white on black text or icons. The lack of a B-pillar in combination with the suicide rear door makes ingress and egress from the rear seats an easy task (even for my 300+ lb friend) as well as making it easy to load cargo. Quite perfect for any weather condition and rusty roads in Houston Texas.
The dash gauges are large and clearly labelled with white text against a black background. Perimeters of the gauges are highlighted with a thin red border which gives a bit of a race-look. A large speedometer dominates the centre with smaller tachometer and temp/fuel gauges flanking the left and right, respectively. Engine information is limited to trip meters, odometer, and oil life.

Jump into the firm, relatively flat front seats, and starter up. Don’t forget to depress the clutch (all the way down!) or the car won’t start. Sitting relatively high, you have a great view of the road and the surroundings in front. The large side mirrors are helpful, but the rear view mirror is useless … a rear vision camera might help prevent running over things shorter than the lower edge of the rear windows. The dash is somewhat futuristic with its blend of shiny plastic trim and embossed plastic and vinyl. Though the Honda dash looks nice, you’ll see inconsistent gaps between surfaces and release marks on the plastic trim pieces.
Overall, the Element SC is a pleasure to drive … acceleration is brisk for a 166-hp vehicle that weighs 3,500 lbs. Imagine driving it into the highways of Houston. After driving a Chrysler PT Cruiser for a few days right after the Element, I appreciated the sharper steering and solid structure of the Honda. Just be prepared for a firmly suspended vehicle that transmits bumps back to the driver. The rear is independently-suspended and I expected better bump absorption than a solid axle. Maybe there’s not enough weight at the rear… who knows? Realizing the hop-happy rear-end, I had to be careful going over speed bumps. Otherwise boxes in the rear cargo get more air time than my 8-year old cousin getting to know her new box-spring mattress.
Wind noise is apparent as the windshield is almost vertical, and the side mirrors are large rectangular books in the path of the wind.

The Honda Element runs on a 166-horsepower … not much by today’s standards, but just about right for the Honda Element. Taking 5 guys to lunch on stop \over in Houston with one passenger weighed as much as two!, did not caused any trouble to the 2.4 liter i-VTEC engine. Honda’s drive-by-wire system is amazing. It’s perfectly weighted and feels just right. Stepping on the gas has a resultant linear feel to acceleration. When I was in the PT Cruiser (which is not drive-by-wire), the pedal action seemed too light and the engine seemed like it was catching up to the pedal stroke rather than being tied to it. Nice job, Honda! Braking is excellent … linear and strong. I was exiting the freeway and accelerating prior to slamming on the brakes as hard as possible (from about 85mph)… no drama, no ABS. Just smooth and controlled braking.

The exterior styling of the new MDX, underwent a similarly rigid workout. According to Frank Paluch, chief engineer of the original and second-generation MDX models, the objective was to provide a “stealth family package,” which the design team accomplished by lowering the visual center of the vehicle, which what they call the C-line, and the D-pillar angled sharply forward to cover the third-row seating. Paluch adds, “The vehicle looks a bit smaller, but it’s wider, longer, and lower. Although it wears all the right clothes, you still can’t say that the MDX can hang with the fast crowd not until you stay behind the steering wheel.. Acura is being sly about powertrain performance, but Paluch says they are aiming for best-in-class V-6 performance. When asked if that translates to 300 hp, he said, “that’s a difficult goal.”
